Born in Queens, NY, and raised in Asheboro, NC, Koi's passion for comics ignited at a local comic shop, where he immersed himself in the industry, collaborating with veterans and learning from talented local artists. This foundation set the stage for his lifelong dream of becoming a comic book artist.
In 1997, Koi returned to New York to turn that dream into reality, joining an art studio that caught the attention of Marvel editors. He began his professional journey as a background artist on notable projects like X-Force with Adam Pollina and Deadpool with Walter McDaniel. A pivotal moment came when Walter overheard an editor looking for an artist to draw dinosaurs; Koi’s portfolio showcased just that, leading to his first Marvel assignment with What If?! issue 112.
A breakthrough came in 2002 at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Convention, where Koi impressed Aspen Comics during a portfolio review, securing a position at their studio in Los Angeles under the mentorship of Michael Turner. Here, Koi truly flourished, ultimately taking the reins on Fathom Volume 2, where he infused his unique style while honoring Mike's legacy.
Koi has since carved out a niche for himself at both DC Comics—contributing to titles like Flash and Superman Confidential—and Marvel Comics, working on Terror INC, New Warriors, Black Panther, and One Month 2 Live. Recently, he has expanded his artistic horizons by working on projects beyond traditional comics, including trading cards, concept designs, character designs, posters, covers, and toy designs, allowing his creativity to flourish in various mediums.
